PROJECT DETAILS

Umarpada is a Taluka in Surat District of Gujarat State located in the Foothill of Satapuda range. It is 88 KM towards East from District headquarters Surat. 253 KM from State capital Gandhinagar towards North. Umarpada Taluka is bounded by Dediyapada Taluka towards North, Valia Taluka towards west, Mandvi Taluka towards west, Sagbara Taluka towards East. Umarpada consist of 107 Villages and 33 Panchayats. It is in the 241 m elevation(altitude). The taluka is dominant by hill tribes mainly Vasava and Choudhary. In Umarpada, The project will work directly with smallholder households from the 12 selected villages (with landholding size of up to 2 acres) and 3100 HHs. Project will indirectly impact 15500 population (considering 5 members in each household).

Indirectly the project will reach other key stakeholders such as PRI members, existing farmers collectives, relevant govt. departments at block, district level and non-Agriculture/Landless/Seasonal migrant HHs within the identified project villages.


Through different interventions, the project will facilitate adoption of sustainable agricultural packages based on integrated pest and nutrient management (IPNM) with efficient water and energy conservation practices, which will support in transferring rainfed agriculture to irrigated agriculture based on community’s capacity, prevailing agri/natural resources, and climate influence.


JOB SUMMARY


Agriculture Engineer will be primarily responsible for coordinating, planning, implementing and completing all project-related activities in Umarpada location within the stipulated time in complete coordinate with the other project team members. S/he will work closely with the Program manager, Field Associate, Procurement , Admin and Finance to create an enabling environment for developing a more secure and resilient livelihood for the smallholders. This position will ensure smooth implementation of all project-related planning, design, and execution of efficient water management and energy conservation practices. In addition, the position also requires support on community mobilization for integrated pest and nutrition management, training on crop water budgeting and strengthening existing village institutions. S/he will also provide management and technical guidance to the design and quality implementation of project activities, development of required systems, processes and procedures for project implementation.


ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Efficient water management and Energy Conservation
  • Provide leadership to the development, roll out and effective implementation of Food water energy nexus related interventions.
  • Develop/refine strategy , innovative model and plan around water management, aoil & water conservation in alignment with the project interventions
  • Lead execution of the model, including on ground set -up of operations, developing relevant relations with ecosystem actors, and effective flow of products and services
  • Exercise oversight on the operations of the model, with a focus on quality and diversification of products and services, capacity building, and scale up in promoting food water energy nexus.
  • Ensure quality implementation along with reaching of all desired impacts and outcomes of the project.

Project implementation

  • Identifying, contextualize and formalize innovative solutions for promoting food water energy nexus within the project location.
  • Capacitate women farmers to adopt sustainable practices around efficient water management in agriculture through Farmer Field School approach
  • Designing of tools on food water energy nexus
  • Assist community in adopting soil and water conservation practices as relevant to the project location
  • Conduct training programs and co-ordinate other capacity building initiatives around water management and soil & water conservations practices for the community, community institutions, project’s frontline cadre and other stakeholders
  • Design and develop resource and IEC material and training modules for awareness generation, training, and sensitization of target communities
  • Explore and effectively integrate gender and diversity concerns and priorities in Food water energy nexus at both household and community levels
  • Facilitate cross-learning and dissemination of the best practices in project villages
  • Scout, source, and adapt innovative solutions to the project
  • Provide administrative and logistical support for project events across target communities as and when required

Project planning, monitoring, and reporting

  • Participate and contribute to the development of work plans and periodic progress reports of the project for the assigned component and villages
  • Report to and advise the Project Manager on project interventions
  • Make regular visits to the target intervention communities, carry out required review and monitoring and provide periodic updates to the line manager
  • Maintain a rolling information system on the status of implementation of activities related to Food water energy nexus in project villages

Ongoing coordination with the various government departments for networking and linkages

  • Assist the Project Manager in identifying areas for convergence with district and state level agencies for benefitting project activities and improving visibility.
  • Play a critical role in establishing and strengthening project’s networking with various government departments, NGOs, local institutions and other resource agencies at the district level.
Other responsibilities

Perform any other task assigned by the line manager as per organizational requirement

QUALIFICATION & EXPERIENCE


Essential

  • Post-graduate/ Graduate degree/ Diploma in Agricultural Engineering /Civil engineer/ Agriculture or related field, with minimum five years’ experience in planning and implementing food water energy nexus development and/or livelihood related initiatives at the field level; in case of post-graduates, the minimum experience requirement is five years.
  • Demonstrated knowledge/ experience in project interventions that deal with various types of Irrigation water application systems i.e. micro/ precision irrigation, lift (well/ river lift point) irrigation, Solar powered irrigation systems.
  • Ability to Assess and apply agricultural water management techniques, undertake water use efficiency, crop water requirement calculations and provide cost-effective irrigation scheduling for farmers (crop and agro-climate specific)
  • Prior field experience of Gujarat will be a plus
  • S/he should be familiar with gender concepts and issues, especially around women smallholders’ access and control over rights, resources, and opportunities


Preferred

  • Basic computer skills including working on MS Office is a must
  • Fluent knowledge of reading, writing and speaking Hindi and English are non-negotiable.
  • Should have a valid two-wheeler driving license

Prior experience of working in a livelihood or any social sector projects/organization will be a definite plus
