Desert Choice Schools is looking for a General Education Teacher (K-8)- for our Alternative Education Classroom in Peoria, AZ, for the 23/24 School Year.

Desert Choice Schools, a Learn It Family of Companies division, is a certified K -12 Private Day School approved by the Arizona Department of Education to provide Special Education Services for the following disability categories: Autism (A), Emotional Disability and Emotional Disability-Private (ED) (ED-P),Developmental Delay (DD), Mild Intellectual Disability (MIID), Moderate Intellectual Disability (MOID),Orthopedic Impairment (OI), Other Health Impaired (OHI), Specific Learning Disability (SLD), Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI),Visually Impaired (VI), and Speech-Language Impairment (SLI).Desert Choice Schools utilizes a highly-structured, school-wide Positive Behavioral Supports program that teaches students Academic, Social/Emotional Problem-Solving and Strategies. All DCS teachers and support staff are trained in a unique methodology that assists students with maintaining Positive Choice-Making.Alternative Education Teachers work in a school-based setting and are responsible for providing an educational atmosphere where students have the opportunity to fulfill their potential for intellectual, emotional, physical, and psychological growth. This person is responsible for organizing and implementing an individual instructional program that will result in students achieving academic success in accordance with policies.ResponsibilitiesThe Education Teacher is responsible to implement all Desert Choice Schools/LEARN Behavioral Program Components with integrity as well as oversee behavior technicians’ implementation of these components

Position Requirements
  • Active and valid Arizona General Education Certification (K-8) or dual certified preferred.
  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • Teaching experience with elementary, middle, and/or high school students
  • Experience working with emotional and/or behaviorally challenged students
  • Valid Arizona DPS Fingerprint Card with IVP status and background clearance
  • Spanish speaking a plus. Not required
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities And Personal Characteristics
  • Ability to provide a high level of customer service to principals, classroom teachers, and parents
  • Must be able to teach all basic skills and interact with students, parents and administrators
  • Strong administrative and computer skills and the ability to handle multiple priorities
  • Organized and detailed oriented
  • Professional appearance and attitude at all times
  • Must be able to adhere to a consistent schedule
  • Effective communication in both oral and written
  • Collaborate and able to receive to feedback, mentoring and direction from peers and supervisors
  • Maintain a professional and clinical perspective at all times, able to not internalize or personalize (e.g. emotionally) in regards certain student behaviors or mannerisms that occur
Certifications/Licensures
  • Current Arizona "IVP" DPS Fingerprint Clearance Card is required and/or Background Check for State of OK
  • PCMA Certification a plus

  • Lift and/or move up to 100 pounds
  • Must be able to assume and maintain a variety of postures (stoop, reach, stand, kneel, squat, sit, walk, lift, pull, grasp) for extended periods of time
  • Must be willing and able to implement safety measures consistent with Professional Crisis Management Association (PCMA) such as: therapeutic holds and transportation procedures utilizing quick body movements in the course of maintaining the safety of students with special needs
