The role will be based in Kolkata, however as a result of the wide variety of clients and projects, you may be asked to work in other locations and beyond, sometimes at short notice and sometimes over lengthy periods of time. Your desire and ability to do this will be discussed as part of the recruitment process. Candidates who are unable or do not wish to work on projects in other locations will still be considered.

Role description

Our data engineers are integral to our recent growth and success within our data management & engineering division. You will be working on high profiled client projects by supporting our engagement teams with a variety of engineering tasks and will be responsible for continuing the success PwC has had in cloud technologies including performing ETL, the creation and maintenance of cloud infrastructure, development of data warehousing and lakes, productionising algorithms, assessing pipelines, and keeping the team at the leading edge of cloud technologies.

The Data Engineer will be required to support engagement teams with a number of tasks, which are supported through various data collection, interrogation and visualisation activities.

As a Manager you will be able to resolve unusual and nonstandard problems and issues; you are aware of alternative options and approaches to situations, can guide and advise others in this skill and are able to look ahead and anticipate. You display extensive practical experience and applied knowledge of the subject in a wide range of work situations. You are seen as a role model for others and people will seek your advice. As a manager, it is highly likely that you will be involved in coaching or mentoring activities related to this skill.

Those with only theoretical viewpoints in Data Engineering in cloud technologies will not be considered.

Key activities include, but not be limited to

• Designing and implementing extract, transform and load (ETL) pipelines to enable our projects (including those from 3rd party sources and APIs)

• Designing and implementing data models across the different initiatives in the team

• Architecting and designing technical solutions based on industry standards using IaaS, PaaS and SaaS capabilities.

• Identifying and patching issues and bugs identified in the pipeline/architecture

• Resolving issues regarding data quality, cleansing, integration and migration

• Working as part of a data specialist team to deliver quality service to engagement client

• Providing access and identity management to onboard new customers onto the pre-existing platform

• Communicating with key stakeholders to define data requirements to support business issues / queries, including collecting, analysing, interpreting, and translating the result to non-technical stakeholders

Essential requirements

• More than 8 years experience in a data engineering role accompanied with demonstrable knowledge and/or certificates.

• Experience across data engineering disciplines including data governance, quality, migration, modelling, pipelining and warehousing

• Strong understanding in big data and distribution architecture.

• Experience working with Hadoop/Spark.

• Experience with Azure Data Factory, Databricks and Synapse or comparable.

• Experience with Azure Data Lakes and Data Warehousing or comparable.

• Advanced working knowledge of SQL.

• Fluency in Python, PySpark or R

• Significant practical experience working with cloud platforms (Azure strongly preferred)

• Experience in building and maintaining data pipelines and architecture

• Experience with both PaaS (Platform-as-a-Service) and IaaS (Infrastructure as a Service)

• Understanding of cloud native application, micro-services, containers, Kubernetes and related cloud infrastructure and architecture

Additional skills / experience that will be beneficial

• Experience in Azure DevOps (CI/CD).

• Experience with noSQL databases.

• Experience with Graph Databases.

• Experience working with the Microsoft Azure cloud-based ecosystem.

• Experience working with Agile methodologies.

• BPSS or SC security clearances are desirable.

• Undergraduate degree (e.g. BSc, BA).
