Introduction:

The Front-End Developer works within the Economist Impact team and is responsible for the development of digital deliverables from start to finish, working with our in house teams and partners to create digital experiences that deliver value for users and customers.

You can expect to be working on an exciting array of technical challenges including interactive storytelling web experiences, our component library, our modern content platform architecture, data visualisation, and advertising and data technology integrations.

As well as working independently on producing high quality code that addresses a range of use cases, the role also entails working with other developers to help set our technical standards, participate in code reviews and testing protocols, ensuring partner quality, and collaborating with product and other teams on our agile delivery workflow.

The role will suit a motivated and experienced developer who enjoys working with autonomy in a creative and entrepreneurial environment, and has a strong commitment to producing high quality code, and performant, user-focused digital experiences.
Accountabilities:
How you will contribute:
  • Own the development of storytelling driven digital experiences, and contribute to bespoke ad tech and content focused products
  • Be a core part of the team building libraries and templates to unify he approach to front end development acorss a wealth of projects involving many stakeholders and partners
  • Work with designers, product owners, and delivery managers within our organisation and with our partners to create seamless user experiences
  • Contribute to CI processes and tools working with devops and other teams inside our organisation
  • Contribute to technical documentation of output and contribute to our agile workflows
  • Collaborate with analytics, infrastructure, information security and other group teams to ensure successful delivery and ongoing maintenance of digital assets
  • Participate in new and emerging technology evaluations, R&D and adoption

Experience, skills and professional attributes:
The ideal skills for this role include:
  • 3+ years of relevant experience as a front-end developer with expertise in HTML, CSS and JavaScript
  • You have experience creating compelling web experiences that delight and engage users
  • You’re comfortable using the latest CSS techniques, and have experience using CSS-in-JS and/or CSS Modules
  • Experience using animation techniques in the browser, for example CSS animations or Javascript using GSAP
  • Exposure to modern frameworks such as React or Vue, although other relevant experience will be considered
  • Some experience writing automated tests, deployment pipelines and automation in general would be helpful
  • Experience with Git workflow and CI processes and tools (Github Actions, Circle CI, or others)
  • You’ll value well-thought-out and straightforward solutions to problems
  • Mentorship experience: you’ll have been seen as a go-to person in your last role, and you have a strong ability to multitask, work independently, and move between distinct projects
  • Good technical project management skills: taking a set of requirements, breaking the work down, and communicating requirements is second nature
  • An interest in, and understanding of current trends in design, technology & media
  • Understanding of the tools, techniques and principles required to support the maintenance and security of a sizeable web estate
