The Challenge

Small and Marginal Farmers constitute 70 million households in India. The farmers face challenges of fragmented landholdings, low monthly household income (typically less than Rs.6000 pm), lack of access to quality inputs (30% probability of seeds/pesticides being spurious/adulterated), and lack of access to credit. Farmers also gamble with the monsoon that if delayed leads to low yields and low income, and if on-time leads to high yields, price drops, and low income. It’s no surprise that these challenges lead to increased migration, aging farmers, an increased number of women-led farming households, and aspirational changes in the rural youth.

Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs) are a powerful vehicle to provide better farm practices, collectivize input purchases, create market linkages, and realize better prices for the farmer. Although the government is interested in forming and supporting these FPOs, their well-intentioned efforts are ineffective – over 85% of 7374 registered FPOs are inactive.

About Us

The/Nudge Foundation exists to alleviate poverty. We are a collective of some of India’s best leaders and entrepreneurs from across industry, academia, government, and the development sector, passionately working on ways to address poverty sustainably and at scale.

In the five years since our inception, we have worked on a range of initiatives including developing innovative programs that enable underprivileged youth to lead flourishing lives, adapting evidence-based approaches to enable rural families to come out of extreme poverty, and incubating 60+ nonprofits focused on solving India’s biggest challenges. We have also used the knowledge and networks developed through our work to impact policy, address ecosystem barriers and launch scale programs.

At the Centre for Rural Development, we focus on the small and marginal farmer. We are setting up a team to work on the opportunity of ‘Re-imagining FPOs’. As a part of this team, you will be responsible for developing innovative and robust models of FPOs; getting these models implemented and adopted (by incubating ventures, supporting existing and players from adjacent spaces, etc); creating opportunities with other ecosystem players (e.g., with institutional buyers and financiers); addressing ecosystem barriers as they become critical; and facilitating a learning and data driven environment. Role and Responsibilities

• Independently and collaboratively manage partners and supporters in the FPO ecosystem, both at the leadership level and the ground/local level
• Understand their objectives and plans and identify opportunities to serve FPOs effectively (including in UP)
• Build a support ecosystem to enable partners to act on these opportunities
• Provide execution support to partners through introductions to other players, performance analysis, co-developing solutions and pilots, etc
• Leverage learnings to stimulate the Government, nonprofits, and private sector to support FPOs
  

We are looking for an entrepreneurial, results-driven, and collaborative business leader who enjoys developing and managing client relationships.

• can manage projects with attention to detail in ambiguous environments
