About the job

The role of Deputy Trade Commissioner (DTC), Trade Policy, Exports and Economics, South Asia will see you champion British businesses and support their entry into some of the world’s fastest growing markets. You’ll support the DIT Chief Negotiator on the development of a free-trade agreement between the UK and India.

You’ll manage a cross-mission team of over 90 colleagues across India and the region. You will also represent HM Treasury’s in delivering the annual Economic and Financial Dialogue, co-chaired by the UK Chancellor and Indian Finance Minister.

You will be a member of the senior leadership team of the British High Commission in India working closely with the Deputy Trade Commissioner for Investment to ensure we maximise opportunities for UK businesses across South Asia.

Job Description
  • You will lead on trade policy at post across South Asia with a particular focus on the development of a free-trade agreement between the UK and India. You will lead the Trade Policy team to deliver the annual Ministerial Joint Economic and Trade Committee and to reduce market access barriers to help UK’s business enter India and markets across South Asia.
  • You will lead on exports and Overseas Direct Investment across South Asia helping more British businesses in priority sectors like agriculture, financial and professional services, green energy, health, and tech to increase market share. You will work with businesses, regional organisations and representative bodies across the UK and in market. You will be a confident champion for UK business across South Asia.
  • As DTC you will lead the Department’s works across North India, Nepal and Bangladesh working closely with High Commissioners/Ambassadors and Deputy High Commissioners in India. You will also work closely with UK Ministers and Departments including on Ministerial visits and events. You will build relationships with the top investors across North India with a focus on the Delhi region.
  • You will be a member of the DIT South Asia senior leadership team providing strategic leadership to the DIT agenda across South Asia ensuring we deliver the Secretary of State’s priorities as set out in our Regional Trade Plan and the objectives set out in FCDO country plans across South Asia.
  • You will also be a member of the senior leadership team of the British High Commission in India. You will work closely with the Deputy Trade Commissioner for Investment to ensure we maximise opportunities for UK businesses across South Asia.
  • You will also lead the India Economics team, representing HM Treasury interests to India’s Ministry of Finance, Reserve Bank of India and regulators, delivering the annual Economic and Financial Dialogue, co-chaired by the UK Chancellor and Indian Finance Minister. You will lead policy engagement on green finance and financial services market access, and oversee the India network’s economic analysis, drawing on a network of relationships with Indian economic experts. You will oversee ODA and non-ODA funded programming to develop India’s economy and financial markets, and deliver regulatory reform.
  • You will lead a team of approximately 90 staff across South Asia. You will provide strategic direction and inspiring leadership to your team and maintain high levels of employee engagement. You will be responsible for regional export budgets.
Responsibilities
  • Commercially minded with highly developed strategic business acumen;
  • Experience of working internationally at a strategic government level, or, experience of working within the UK on international government issues;
  • Experience of navigating the political landscape with, highly developed political nous, and personal gravitas;
  • Strong corporate leadership with experience of leading a large team in a complex and dynamic environment, with an engaging, adaptable, leadership style which connects with people at all levels;
  • Excellent communication skills and finely tuned judgement, with, a proven ability to build strong and effective relationships.

Selection process details

This position is open to pre-existing job share partnerships.

Please note that the sift will take place in week commencing 15 November 2021.

Assessments will take place in weeks commencing 22 and 29 November 2021.

Interviews will take place in week commencing 6 December 2021.
