SUMMARY OF POST

To support STM (Science, Technology & Medicine) Publisher and Editors in the management and development of a group of journals, and the acquisition and launch of new titles.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Administrative support

  • Provide general administrative support to the HSS (Humanities & Social Science) or STM (Science, Technology & Medicine) journals department as required, with a special focus on the mathematical, physical & engineering sciences portfolio of journals.
  • Ensure efficient and timely distribution of information within the STM (Science, Technology & Medicine) journals department and where appropriate across the wider journals division (e.g. marketing, production, finance), as directed by the Publisher or Publishing Editor, for example updates relevant to the whole team.
  • Keep information resources, including spreadsheets, databases and web pages, up to date as necessary.
  • Keep up to date with the latest system developments and assist with testing of new systems.
  • Liaise as required with internal colleagues and external society partners and editors.
  • Take part in team-wide and cross department activities as needed.



Journal development and management support

  • Support the day-to-day editorial management and development of journals as directed by line manager.
  • Support team members in the preparation of publishing reports, accounts, journal development plans, proposals and journal tender documents.
  • Conduct data analysis, market intelligence & research and competitive analyses for a variety of subject areas as required.
  • Assist with commissioning activities, such as the identification of new authors to invite to submit to the journals identified for development or new launch.
  • Assist the Editors with the transfer of newly signed journals onto the list and the launching of new titles.
  • Be familiar with publishing ethics best practice, industry-wide standards, relevant discipline-specific standards, and publishing ethics guidelines and escalation procedures set by Cambridge University Press.

Engagement and networking

  • Maintain awareness major initiatives/movements within the academic publishing industry, especially on open access.
  • Promote a positive image of the organisation with existing and potential partners and clients, and promote a positive image of the Journals Editorial team within the organisation.
  • May undertake the organisation of webinars and virtual conferences or events, present reports, and participate in proprietor and Editorial Board meetings. Tasks might include arranging and minuting meetings


CONTEXT

  • Providing support to a team of Editors, normally headed by an Executive Publisher, in the day to day management of their journals and in the effective running of the department as a whole.
  • Part of a collaborative global team of about 50 editorial colleagues in Cambridge and New York driving the commercial growth and academic reputation of HSS/STM journals published under contract and owned by the Press Syndicate.




PERSON SPECIFICATION

  • Looking for candidates with a minimum qualification as- B.Sc (Maths or Physics), B.E or B.Tech. M.Sc- Maths or Physics only


KNOWLEDGE & EXPERIENCE

  • The successful candidate will be educated to degree level in the mathematical, physical or engineering sciences or equivalent, and will be able to demonstrate a strong interest in journals publishing.
  • Good IT, data organisation, analytical skills, especially proficiency in MS Word and MS Excel.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills are also essential.
  • Previous office experience of 1 to 3 years would be an advantage.
