Lead Systems Engineer - Routing & Switching protocols

What will you do at Ciena?

The Routing & Switching (RSP) R&D organisation is responsible for delivering platform-independent Service Aware Operating System (SAOS) and Access products to support Mobile Backhaul, Enterprise, NFV and White-box based applications in access and aggregation tiers of the network.

Gurgaon R&D center has seen exponential growth in various dimensions including development, test and release planning. In last 6 years, Gurgaon test team has grown to be the largest team across globe having ownership of multiple RSP products/releases. Team has huge state-of-art engineering lab in Gurgaon and real time exposure to Tier-1 service provider network deployments.

ETS team charter is to work closely with customer facing teams like technical support team, sales engineers, customer account teams and with different R&D teams to provide faster resolution of service impacting escalations. This team is accountable for recreating customer found defects and help R&D to provide quick solution through a patch if required.

We’re looking for an experienced individual interested in progressing their career in telecommunications and test and has expertise in Data Networking, Ethernet switches and Ethernet products architecture. You will diagnose and troubleshoot complex and challenging software issues from different technologies and resolve it to closure.

Responsibilities

• Act as a conduit for customer and field escalations into R&D team for resolution. Then validate candidate software builds that resolve service impacting defects
• Work closely with engineers from embedded software, testing, network management software, and hardware to diagnose, resolve, and test cohesive end-to-end solutions
• Coordinate with North America test and development teams on a need basis
• Ensure software meets standards and functional requirements and make recommendations where applicable

General Activities

• Activities include problem analysis/troubleshooting & recreation using tools and network elements involved, followed by the creation of software defects where appropriate.
• ETS engineers will validate candidate software builds that resolve service impacting defects
• Execution of test procedures while documenting clear & concise artifacts
• Participate in customer conference calls related to tracking and release scheduling of the defect fixes. Maintain history of customer issues, review of PV test cases and present escape analysis on regular basis
• Review PV test plans to ensure coverage of customer use-cases, review internally found product defects and highlight critical issues that can have potential customer impact

Collaboration with stakeholders

• R&D Software and Product Validation teams for Ciena Networking products
• Field Support teams
• Customer Accounts team
• PLM and Product Architects

Experience / Skill Required:

• 9+ years of experience with Bachelor’s/ Master’s degree in Computer Science (or equivalent).
• Hands-on Experience on real-world topologies in at least three of the following domains: Ethernet/MPLS/G.8032/TDM/OSPF/RSVP-TE/NFV/OAM(BFD, CFM, AIS)/L3VPN/BGP/ISIS/Segment Routing/EVPN
• Position requires proficient troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
• Experience with Network Management Systems including knowledge of SNMP & MIBs
• Experience with test equipment such as Ixia, Spirent, Network emulators, Juniper/Cisco/Nokia
• Must be a motivated, self-starter with strong commitment to product excellence
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, effectively able to collaborate with multiple teams across geographically diverse areas.
