About the opportunity


As Systems Administrator (Microsoft Technologies) for Managed Services at Ellucian you will be key contributor to planning, analysis, coordination, support and maintenance of the Windows environments. It includes support for applications such as SharePoint, Active Directory, Azure, Exchange, SQL Server, SCCM, and VMware. With these numerous solutions comes the responsibility of managing and monitoring the infrastructure that resides on them. You will install, configure, and maintain Microsoft-based technologies and any required technologies in support of the ERP, its components, and other non-ERP specific systems. You will be critical in the coordination of physical and logical changes to the Windows environments.

  • Server hardware troubleshooting and configuration
  • Server capacity planning and management
  • Active server monitoring and resolution of all alerts
  • Operating systems troubleshooting and configuration for Microsoft
  • Disaster recovery planning and testing, including backup and restore; remote software installations, and upgrades
  • Management of End Point protection solutions
  • Server patching, configuration, hardening
  • Proactively monitor and optimize system performance using tuning, optimization, and other methods. Identify, design, prepare, recommend and adapt best practices for Microsoft system stability, security and optimal performance. Perform capacity planning.
  • Technical adviser to provide detailed planning information to project coordinators to assist in planning of service requests, implementation steps, corrective actions, upgrade recommendations and optimization steps for Microsoft technologies and products. Includes installation of application patches, updates and releases on development, test, quality assurance and production systems .
  • Lead technical efforts in Infrastructure and systems integrity, performance, security, scalability, optimization, and troubleshooting.
  • Identify and participate in the implementation of hardware, operating system and software enhancements for improving the reliability, performance and availability of the systems.
  • Proactively monitor and manage batch jobs. Responsible and accountable for all system backups, processes for Windows systems.
  • Configure monitoring tools to evaluate the performance of systems.
  • Train and mentor junior system admin and IT operations staff and/or helpdesk personnel to run system maintenance and IT operations tasks.
  • Provide technical administration and migration support for various Windows environments.
  • Enforce application change control and migration strategy policies are followed.
  • Ability to automate processes through the effective application of scripts (PowerShell, Perl, VBS)
  • All members of the team are expected to participate in our on-call process (24/7 production support).
  • Performing other duties as assigned.


What you will bring


  • 6 – 8 years of overall IT experience with an Engineering or equivalent degree
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience as Microsoft System Administrator
  • Minimum of two years of experience supporting the following:
      • Server OS: Microsoft Windows Server 2008/2012/2016
    • - Active Directory - Microsoft Exchange Server 2007, 2010, 2013, 2016, Enterprise Vault and ProofPoint
      • Active Directory Domain Services including one or more GPOs, Active Directory Certificate Services, Active Directory Federation Services, Azure Active Directory, Azure Multi-Factor Authentication
    • - Messaging - Microsoft Lync Server 2010, Skype for Business 2015
      • Desktop OS: Windows 10 and Windows 7
      • EndPoint Protection
      • Deployment tools: SCCM
      • Additional tools: PowerShell
  • Working knowledge and experience of Cloud solutions with Microsoft Azure
  • Strong hands-on administration experience on Windows 2008/2012 server- Forest, Domain trust, AD, DFS, DNS, WINS, DHCP, Group Policy, Distribution lists, Windows folder security, and IP filter.
  • Expert level knowledge at Active Directory LDAP service, shell scripting, Certificate services (PKI), AD Site Topology – all under a multi-site multi-domain Windows 2008/2012 environment.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills in a Windows 2008/2012 environment – Event log analysis, installation and administration of Windows Server 2008/2012, including user setup and defining roles, performance tuning, backup and restore, security monitoring, registry and AD scripting.
  • Experience in the administration and management of Microsoft Office 365
  • Experience in the administration and management of Microsoft Sharepoint
  • Heavy Root Cause Analysis.
  • Ability to work well with your supervisor, other departments, and technical support staff. This includes the ability to clearly document and explain problems, as well as work with others to resolve software defects.
  • Working knowledge of TCP/IP protocol.
  • Working knowledge of network Services based on Windows server: DNS, DHCP, IPAM, NPS, DFS
  • Ability to plan, manage time according to schedules, and provide status updates required.
  • Ability to quickly learn new tools and resolve issues using all available resources.
  • Experience in the administration of Windows 2008/2012 server:
  • Experience in the administration of one or more of the following: MS Exchange 2010/2013/2016 Enterprise.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work well in a team environment.
  • Has the ability to be self-motivated and find answers on his/her own.
  • Previous experience working with an enterprise wide, large scale environment.
  • Excellent Communications skills (Oral and written), interpersonal, and organizational skills.
  • Strong understanding of Clustered & high availability environments and Virtualization environments (Microsoft Hyper-V)
  • Knowledge of performance tuning in an operational or Production environment
  • Working knowledge of Diagnostics tools: Performance and Analysis of Logs, WireShark, Microsoft Message Analyzer, WinDBG.
  • Must be willing to work outside regular business hours as required by implementation of special projects, support and emergencies
  • Ability to work effectively with end-users and teammates, to gain their confidence, to understand their technical and operational needs and translate them into viable technical solutions
  • Work independently and multitask, prioritize tasks, and execute without constant supervision
  • Workflow automation of common repeatable tasks
  • Knowledge Management

Desired Skills:

  • MCSE certified in Windows 2008 or Windows 2012 is desired.
  • SQL Server Certifications
  • Microsoft Certifications
  • Amazon Web Services (AWS) Certifications or Azure Certifications / Azure Experience
  • Clustering, Replication
  • Additional Knowledge in Netbackup, HP printer server, Solarwinds, is a plus.
