Role: Principal Quality Engineer

Business: Research Products

Reporting to: Quality Engineering Manager, Shared Platforms

Location: Bangalore, India

Travel expected: This is an office-based role; however, you may be asked to travel occasionally to other Elsevier offices worldwide

Job Summary

The Principal Quality Test Engineer position is a key role within our Data Platform group, part of the wider Elsevier Research Technology. This position owns & drives the quality engineering aspects of our Metrics & Insights domain, whilst providing subject matter expertise and guidance on implementation of new technology. Provides thought-leadership. Embedded with Squads for product engineering but also drives the Quality Guild & Chapters to design & implement QE strategy & architect performance & automation testing solutions.

Key responsibilities a Principal Quality Test Engineer will undertake:

Leader in the Quality Chapter for a Product group

The link between the Research Technology Quality Guild and local Quality Chapter

Research & implement automation & performance tooling

Coaches Squads on quality approaches

Hands-on product delivery in squad

Works with Architecture & Development to plan architecture & testing approaches / tooling appropriate for that architecture

Thorough understanding of industry-trends, latest tooling

Ability to apply theoretical knowledge

Mentors & guides more junior engineers

Drives the Quality agenda via the Guilds/Chapters and delivery teams

Broad & thorough knowledge of software engineering (development, CI/CD pipeline engineering, Security, etc)

Planning

Embedded with a Squad will spend 70% of time contributing to product work & implementing QE strategies/ tooling in squad

With wider portfolio & Quality Chapters/Guilds will spend 30% of time on new quality strategy/tooling/techniques (research, implementation)

Expected to use their time to mentor junior QEs and Squads

Decision Making

Implementing QE Tooling and Techniques

Squad level Quality Testing approaches & strategy (with management)

Product technical decisions (e.g. does a new product require a new test automation framework, is the product architecture testable?)

The role is going to be part of a squad with some members in London and some members located across US. As such all team meeting are conducted in the afternoon or evening.

About You

As a Principal Quality Test Engineer, y

ou

are passionate about shipping high quality software to the customer as quickly as possible and make it your business to question everything to achieve that. You understand that shipping high quality software starts with quality requirements and are comfortable helping to define these and fleshing out acceptance criteria. You are confident talking to customers and stakeholders and engaging them in the process where necessary.

Essential Technical Skills

10+ years experience in quality engineering

7+ years of automating tests in Java

Experience implementing

REST API Automation

Using performance testing automation tools such as

JMeter/Gatling or similar

tools

Working knowledge of testing techniques, test methodologies their application and practical usage

CI/CD pipelines experience

Working knowledge of cloud-based infrastructure using Amazon Web Services

or similar cloud technologies

Understand the importance of gathering useful metrics around performance and load

testing and have experience helping teams to achieve this

Ability to work with several squads at the same time, while championing quality and ensuring delivery

Desired Technical Skills

but not Essential for the role

Experience or knowledge automating

tests using Scala
