For Project Officer, Red Panda Conservation

The Khangchendzonga Landscape of WWF India has launched an initiative to deepen our work on Red Panda conservation within the landscape (Sikkim and Darjeeling). The selected candidate will have an opportunity to be a part of this exciting initiative that includes action in both the social and ecological domains to conserve the species and its habitat in Sikkim. This is a project level appointment, which will be extended basis performance of the candidate and if the project on red panda conservation is extended further or if the candidates is meritorious enough to warrant transfer to other projects.

For Project Officer, Snow Leopard Conservation

Communities coexisting with Snow Leopards need to be supported in the management/ mitigation of conflict with snow leopards and other carnivores in the high altitude region of Sikkim, they also need to be engaged in the sustainable use and management of natural resources and spaces (high altitude pastures), and in the management of pressures (from unsustainable tourism for instance) and yet benefit economically. For over six years now, the KCL team in Sikkim has worked systematically on snow leopard conservation on all of the above, this work needs to continue and be extended to hitherto un reached areas and communities. This is a project level appointment, which will be extended basis performance of the candidate and if the project on snow leopard conservation is extended further or if the candidates is meritorious enough to warrant transfer to other projects

Job Profile : The recruits will work closely with and report to the Landscape Coordinator, KCL-Sikkim

  • Programme Development
    • Imbibe the Red Panda/ Snow Leopard conservation strategy of the Wildlife and Habitat Programme, WWF India and draw linkages between project activities and the former
  • Programme Implementation
    • Implementation of alternate source of energy in villages adjacent to red panda habitats and conduct training programs/ Implementation of activities including on waste management in villages/ hamlets in snow leopard habitats.
    • Improve management of red panda/ snow leopard habitats through formation of Red Panda/ Snow Leopard Guardians, training and empowering them; and implement initiatives for reduction of pressure on habitats.
    • Assist in conducting field-based studies to examine determinants of red panda/ snow leopard habitat use in Sikkim.
    • Build large scale awareness and education campaign to generate awareness about significance of red pandas/ snow leopards and instil pride among citizens.
  • Networking and advocacy
    • The candidate will assist the Project Leader for effective liaising with stakeholders including Govt. department (s), Institutions(s), and NGOs for any issue pertaining to planning and implementation of project activities in the landscape.
  • Reporting
    • Assist Project Leader with coordination, technical reporting and report writing.
Requirements

Desired Qualifications, Experience and Abilities :

  • Master’s in Social Work/ Science, Rural Development/ Rural Management, or other relevant qualification.
  • Preferably 1 -2 years. Prior experience of working in mountain areas/ landscapes.
  • Experience in community engagement and livelihood enhancement interventions, in the domain of human-wildlife conflict and community based natural resource management.
  • Some experience in sign-surveys, ecological assessments would be an advantage though it is not a prerequisite. Good report writing skills, coordination/ liaison and communication skills are essential.
  • Preference will be given to candidates with experience of working in Sikkim-Darjeeling Himalaya.
