- To strategize and coordinate PETA India litigation, including by engaging external counsel
- To help influence government decision-makers in the development of animal-friendly legislation and policies
- To help influence corporate entities to incorporate animal-friendly operating procedures and policies
- To ensure PETA India staff members are operating with sound legal knowledge and using the strongest legal arguments to meet organisational objectives
- To prepare casework against individuals or organisations responsible for cruelty to animals

Primary Responsibilities and Duties:
- Collect and meticulously review case material to advise the organisation on and establish winning strategies
- Develop and coordinate high-profile, strategic litigation for the advancement of animal protection under law, including by engaging external counsel and appearing in court with an objective to win
- Identify, select, and manage external litigation counsel on all matters under supervision
- Arrange legal notices on PETA India’s behalf to send to individuals or organisations breaking animal-protection laws when required
- Support writing letters to, meet with, and persuade government decision-makers concerning the development of animal-friendly legislation and policies, including through representation on government committees when required
- Support writing letters to, meet with, and persuade corporations about the incorporation of animal-friendly operating procedures and policies when required
- Support writing letters to, meet with, and persuade law-enforcement officials to act against cases of cruelty to animals when required
- Conduct research to help ensure PETA India staff members are operating with sound legal knowledge and using the strongest legal arguments to advance towards and meet our objectives
- Conduct media interviews, including on-camera and other public-speaking engagements about cases and PETA India’s policy advocacy work and campaigns when requested
- Provide campaigners, researchers, investigators, and caseworkers with legal support
- Research, interpret, and apply pertinent central government and state statutes, regulations, and case laws
- Report on weekly developments in all significant matters as well as future courses of action and related deadlines
- Monitor issues and cases for potential legal action
- Perform any other duties assigned by the supervisor
Qualifications and Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in law (LLB) from a university recognised by the Bar Council of India
- Minimum of five years of litigation experience
- Minimum of five years of experience in a related role preferred
- Experience in animal rights law or a related field preferred
- Thorough knowledge of animal rights issues and PETA campaigns
- Proven excellent legal research and writing skills
- Proven excellent strategic-thinking and analytical skills
- Proven ability to handle multiple tasks under strict time constraints
- Professional appearance and adherence to a healthy vegan lifestyle
- Support for PETA India’s philosophy and the ability to advocate for PETA India’s positions on issues in a professional manner
- Commitment to the objectives of the organisation
- Fluency in Hindi and English
- Knowledge of other local Indian languages a plus
