Role Title: Data Scientist

Location: Hyderabad, Telangana

Role purpose:

This role will apply Big-data, Machine Learning, and statistics capabilities to enable the implementation and execution of Molecular breeding toos and methodologies. This person will work with the breeding teams to develop data interpretations, predictive models, and their applications to drive data-driven decision-making. He/she will use all the latest technologies to drive rapid genetic gains in corn and rice crops in APAC.

Accountabilities:

  • Undertake an expert role in implementation and execution of Big-Data tools like FADA for germplasm and marker management and HYPR, OneGeSel, etc. for data analyses.
  • Support the development and optimization of new/unique computational applications/tools by applying machine learning.
  • Provide data analytical support such as regression, ANOVA, BLUEs & BLUPS, GCA/SCA values, clustering or classification algorithms or methodologies such as PCA, outcome prediction model-ing, etc. using big marker/phenotype databases.
  • Contribute to the development of customized training sets and deployment of genomic selection for exotic haplotype introgression in the discovery breeding program
  • Consistently document and communicate results of research on data mining, analysis, and modeling approaches to ensure strategic forward planning and alignment within and across teams
  • Work in diverse, cross-collaborative teams with plant breeders, Trialing & Nursery operations, Trait Development, and IT

Critical Knowledge:

  • Demonstrated expertise with tools for data analysis, statistical computation, and visualization (such as Python or R); programing and pipeline development skills integrating large, complex datasets from structured and unstructured sources.
  • Demonstrated skills to use simple interfaces to build visualization capabilities of analysis outputs and results.
  • Experience in machine learning, data mining algorithms, and developing easy-to-use UI’s such as R shiny
  • Ability to align and integrate data science research into crop product development pipelines and materials.
  • Experience working with various types of molecular and genetic data.
  • Demonstrated experience working with molecular marker-based studies applied to plant breeding, such as marker-assisted selection, genome-wide phenotype-to-genotype association, and genomic selection.
  • Experience with complex, multi-source, multi-year, and multi-location biological datasets typical of agricultural systems.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, cross-functional, collaborative environment
  • Creative, innovative, and strategic thinking; willingness to be bold and take risks on novel ideas.
  • Strong problem-solving and communication skills.
  • Curiosity and a desire to continuously learn and stay current on new emerging science and technology

Critical Skills:

  • A growth mindset to continuously look out for and implement new ways of germplasm development is critical
  • Excellent organization, communication, and computer skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, especially those required to successfully function as part of a cross-functional team.

  • Thorough understanding of R&D processes and sufficient knowledge to identify the critical issues and engage effectively with people.

Critical experience:

  • Medium to extensive experience in Big-Data analysis and reporting
  • Working experience with molecular markers for 2 years either in commercial or public/academic setting
  • Experience in operating independently in a complex matrix environment
  • MSc or equivalent degree with 2 years experience in Quantitative Genetics, Population Genetics, Molecular Biology, any other Biology discipline, Data Science, or Computer Science.
