Job Summary
Reporting to the Manager IS - Infrastructure, the Infrastructure Sr. System Engineer is responsible to provide Level 3 – Level 2 on-going support of Avantor’s enterprise servers including on-premises data centers, remote sites and AWS.
This position will have the opportunity to work on a wide range of technologies including virtualization, storage, backup, disaster recovery, cloud services, Windows and Linux environments. The Sr. System Engineer will interact frequently with the server, security, network, database, application and other infrastructure team leads to gather technical requirements, resolve complex technical issues and implement enterprise and cloud-based systems. The Infrastructure Sr. System Engineer will plan, schedule and install system upgrades and OS patches for Windows and Linux servers and will adhere to the Avantor’s change management process.
MAJOR JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (List in order of importance)

  • Support Avantor’s servers (Windows and Linux) global infrastructure.
  • Helps design, document, build, deploy and support complex technology solutions.
  • Identifies and recommends configuration improvements, process improvements and automation opportunities.
  • Integration of new technologies to improve service offerings and better support the business.
  • Helps to configure and migrate clients to AWS cloud services.
  • Supports manager in streaming processes for enterprise level service delivery and works with manager to resolve client infrastructure issues.
  • Participate on Avantor ABS sessions to learn new ways on how to improve instrastructure processes.
  • Actively participate on major company’s projects related to hardware refresh, on-premises data centers and AWS migrations.
  • Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS (Education/Training, Experience and Certifications)

  • Windows Server Administrator certification – required.
  • Minimum of 5-7 years technical experience in IT with a focus on enterprise level for Windows Systems - required.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or equivalent work experience - required.
  • Solid work practices regarding change and risk management, troubleshooting methodology - required.
  • Knowledge of VMWare and UCS Blade environment - desired.
  • 2 or more years of knowledge in Linux server environment (management, configuration, troubleshooting) - desired
  • Experience running enterprise deployment projects - desired.
  • Experience supporting 10K+ server enterprise environments - desired
  • Industry experience in pharma, life sciences, warehouse and/or manufacturing - is a plus
  • Experience with scripting language – is a plus.
  • Linux certification - is a plus
  • AWS certification is a plus
KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES (Those necessary to perform the job competently)

  • Knowledge:
    • Strong knowledge of Windows Server deployment and patching.
    • Strong knowledge on data backups, storage.
    • Knowledge of Linux server deployment and patching.
    • Knowledge of Proxy technologies.
    • Knowledge of centralized printing solutions.
    • Knowledge of VMWare (VSphere, VCenter)
    • Knowledge of Cisco Blade UCS Servers environment.
    • Knowledge of Enterprise WAN/LAN technologies and -monitoring.
    • Knowledge of cloud technologies, especially AWS
    • Broad knowledge of information technologies
  • Skills:
    • Demonstrated excellence in a variety of competencies including teamwork/collaboration, analytical thinking and troubleshooting.
    • Excellent written and verbal communication Skills
    • Strong presentation skills.
    • Excellent troubleshooting skills
    • Scripting to help support of Windows & Linux, virtualization and storage environments.
  • Abilities:
    • Accustomed to work within the ITIL/ITSM framework of Incident, Problem, Change, and release management
    • Ability to be an on-call escalation point for production support and scheduled off-hours/weekend work if/when required
    • Able to successfully work as a valued member of a team of engineers.
    • Able to work with global teams.
  • Additional qualities:

ENVIRONMENTAL WORKING CONDITIONS & PHYSICAL EFFORT (Under Typical Positions)

  • Currently work is performed remotely (work from home), with the ability remain as such if agreed upon during the hiring process. Personal computer will be supplied, adequate network connectivity while working remotely is required and is the responsibility of the individual.
  • When the office re-opens, work from either the Coimbatore or Pune location is expected to resume.
  • Offices have adequate lighting and ventilation and a normal range of temperature and noise level.
  • May intermittently travel domestically, international travel is unlikely.
  • Work assignments are diversified. Examples of past precedent are used to resolve work problems. New alternatives may be developed to resolve problems.
  • A frequent volume of work and deadlines impose strain on routine basis.
  • Flexibility in working hours is expected, typical work hours fall between the business hours of Central European and North American east coast time-zones, flexing as required by current projects.
  • Minimal physical effort is required. Work is mostly sedentary.
