JOB TITLE: Scientist, Legal Affairs

JOB PURPOSE


The Scientist, Legal Affairs is a specialized role in Legal Affairs organization that aims to analyze technology & business information from patent/ open literature to influence creation of SABIC IP assets, mitigate IP risks and many other IP objectives of the company by seamless coordination between technology, business and the attorney teams. The role essentially calls for an understanding of basic IP laws, understanding the business, ability to design search queries across multiple search interfaces, screening & analyzing the result set, to distill technical/ IP legal insights relevant to the project and reporting the findings in a simple & concise manner with the right level of detail based on the audience and context.


Job RESPONSIBILITIES


  • Lead and manage projects that involve identifying, analyzing, creating and/or presenting key information/knowledge related to SABIC’s technology innovations.
  • Interface with the IP attorney and technology/business team to understand the request, scope in/out the project requirement.
  • Provide IP search and analysis e.g. patentability, FTO, invalidation, due-diligence, competitive analysis etc. and provide relevant conclusions and recommendations.
  • Conduct search using varied databases (like Memotech, TekIP tool, Derwent Innovation, Orbit, STN, PatSnap, IP.com, Scifinder) and analyze to identify relevant legal, technical, commercial and other pertinent information using a variety of software platforms (Excel, Advanced Excel, DDA) and condense findings in a clear actionable contextual report.
  • Build tools/macros in order to improve efficiency of the team.
  • Enable patent filings across major jurisdictions by attending meticulously to the procedural aspects of the patent filing process and docketing.


MINIMUM EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • Ph.D. in the field of chemistry/polymer science /polymer technology/ materials science with at least 1+ year of work experience or MS/M Tech in the same field with at least 3+ years of work experience.
  • Experience in an IP firm as an analyst is desirable.
  • Experience in petrochemicals or chemicals industry preferred.
  • Good legal drafting skills, docketing skills and knowledge on procedural aspects of patent filings across various jurisdictions would be an added advantage.
