Title: Senior Specialist – Backup Engineering

Job Purpose Statement

As Senior Specialist, The Backup Expert becomes part of the Platform Backup Engineering Team. The role is expected to design and solution infrastructure, provide L4- technical support, performs life cycle management activities, performs business impact analysis and infrastructure risk assessment of the Managed Backup Service offerings for Sungard Availability Services.

Key Responsibilities

  • Responsibilities include the design engineering architecture tuning and optimization of enterprise backup systems as well as related components to achieve high availability and performance for various business applications.
  • Architect, design, develop and maintain next generation Data Protection features on our Managed Backup Infrastructure with large-scale distributed systems platform.
  • Solutioning Data Protection for Cloud/highly virtualized Architecture design and implementation.
  • Collaborate with Product Management, other cross functional leans and teams within the Organization to shape the future roadmap of Data Protection Services.
  • Provide Top Operational technical support of backup environments, maintaining ownership with high degree of Customer Happiness by meeting Service Level Agreements (SLA) and process compliance.
  • Plan and Execute the Life Cycle Management Activities of the Managed Backup Service Infrastructure
  • Maintain knowledge of multiple technologies in Sungard AS shared environments as well as customer dedicated environments.
  • Perform business impact analysis and risk assessments to reduce the likelihood of significant service outage or disasters
  • Responsible to implement High Availability, Workload Management and Fail Over, Disaster recovery
  • Work Closely with Backup Tier 3 Team, mentor and provide expert technical guidance.
  • Adherence to all SunGard AS’ processes and procedures.
  • Perform after-hours support in an on-call rotation as needed.
  • Provide clear technical documentation and written ISO procedures to ensure SunGard support team members can assist in all phases of management across different device types.
  • Should focus on automation and mentor the team to implement the same
  • Work supportively with colleagues, operating in a collegiate manner at all times and in line with the Company’s values.

Technical Competencies (Experience and Knowledge)

  • Graduate or post-graduate degree in Computer Science or Engineering, desirable.
  • Industry recognized certification in storage/backup technology(ies) a plus, essential.
  • Minimum 8 years’ experience managing Data Protection technologies which includes subsets like
  • Veritas NetBackup 8.x, 7.x and below versions
  • Veritas Appliances 52xx, 53xx
  • Veritas Virtual Appliances
  • Veritas Cloud Catalyst
  • Long Term Data Retention Appliances
  • Knowledge on different Data Protection Products like EMC Data Domain, Zerto, Actifio, Avamar, TSM, Evault, Rubrik
  • Solaris, Linux, Windows Operating System.
  • VMware vSphere 4.x/5.x/6.x vCenter
  • Brocade SAN Switches.
  • Knowledge on Oracle DB, MySQL, Microsoft SQL is a plus
  • WAN/LAN Network Configurations
  • Cloud Architecture
  • Knowledge on Oracle DB, MySQL, Microsoft SQL is a plus, desirable
  • 5+ years’ experience in NetBackup Appliances 52xx, 53xx with experience in Install, Upgrade, Configuration, essential.
  • Must have 4+ years’ experience in enterprise infrastructure management and solution design
  • Must have at 2.5 years’ experience in Cloud/highly virtualized Architecture design and implementation.
  • Work in a high paced Back Up environment.
  • Experience working with version control systems VCS/SCM (Git preferred).
  • Experience in TSM/Evault, desirable.
  • Minimum 6 years’ experience managing an enterprise class tape library using LTO tape drives. Experience with Oracle SL series libraries and ACSLS software a plus.
  • Experience as a NetBackup Administrator for Large Complex/hybrid environments.
  • Deep Understanding of the following NetBackup features: MSDP, Storage Lifecycle Policies, Replication, Vaulting, Accelerator, VADP Backups.
  • Must have Mid-Level Expert knowledge of RAID, SCSI, SAN, NAS, NFS and iSCSI.
  • Proven debugging and analytical skills with solid grasp of system development methodologies, techniques, and tool.
  • BASH, Perl and/or Python scripting is a definite plus, desirable.
  • Hands-on knowledge in creating backup scripts for user backup for UNIX and Windows servers.
  • Proficient in working with high availability environment along with alignment to ITIL Framework.
  • Experience supporting TSM and/or Evault a plus, desirable
  • Experience with backup monitoring tools such as APTARE Storage Console is a plus, desirable
  • Should exhibit knowledge to integrate Data protection infrastructure and applications using AWS.
  • Should be innovative and interested to optimize the solution with upcoming technologies.
  • Experience working within global teams.
  • Strong problem isolation and resolutions skills required.
  • Understanding of Virtualized Environment.
